To provide ethical standards to which the social work profession can be held accountable. They understand that relationships between people are important vehicles for change, advocacy and equity.

The general expectation that social workers will keep information confidential does not apply when disclosure is necessary to prevent serious, foreseeable, and imminent harm to a client or others. Social workers use their skills and knowledge to help their clients through serious social problems, such as drug dependency, child abuse, residential instability and criminal behaviors.

Engage in lifelong learning to maintain competence. Technology-assisted social work services encompass all aspects of social work practice, including psychotherapy; individual, family, or group counseling; community organization; administration; advocacy; mediation; education; supervision; research; evaluation; and other social work services.

Responsibility to the Social Work Profession Social workers should: Competence also means that you're continually striving to improve your knowledge and to make meaningful contributions to the profession. Reasonable differences of opinion exist among social workers concerning their primary obligation as professionals during an actual or threatened labor strike or job action. Social workers pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people.

Consideration should be given to clients' ability to pay. The third section, "Ethical Principles," presents broad ethical principles, based on social work's core values, that inform social work practice.

Social workers should critically examine and keep current with emerging knowledge relevant to social work. Bartering arrangements, particularly involving services, create the potential for conflicts of interest, exploitation, and inappropriate boundaries in social workers' relationships with clients.

Help the profession make social services available to the general public.
