On another late-night visit to Ilsa Hermann's house, Liesel and Rudy take the Duden Dictionary and Thesaurus, which appears to have been placed by the window as a gift.

On a day soon after the book burning, Liesel has to deliver the laundry to the mayor's wife, Ilsa Hermann. Liesel, her mother, and her brother Werner are traveling on a train to Munich when Werner suddenly dies.

An Allied pilot crashes during another raid and Liesel and Rudy watch the pilot die. At the funeral Liesel finds a book called The Grave Digger's Handbook in the snow, but she doesn't know how to read. Nazi soldiers arrive and inspect the basement to see if it is deep enough for a bomb shelter.

Liesel goes to the mayor's library and rips up books in her frustration. This book will educate readers about living under Nazi rule, and it will inspire them to think about human nature and why some heroic people are able to put their lives on the line to do what they know is right.

Death comes for her soul and shows her The Book Thief, and tells her that humans haunt him. She realizes how powerless she is without words, and so Hans, a painter and accordion player, teaches her how to read during midnight lessons in the basement, reading from the book Liesel took from her brother's burial: Liesel eventually grows up and moves to Australia, where she has a family and lives to an old age.

Ilsa Hermann gives Liesel a notebook so she can write her own story. Along the way to her new home with her younger brother, he dies; after the funeral, Liesel steals The Gravedigger's Handbook, though she cannot yet read. Liesel next sees Max being marched towards the concentration camp at Dachau.

Liesel loses hope and begins to disdain the written word, having learnt that Hitler's propaganda is to blame for the war and the Holocaust and the death of her biological family, but Ilsa encourages her to write. Max, too, loves stories and shares these with Liesel.

Liesel steals books that the Nazis have banned or tried to burn. Liesel finds a letter inside from Frau Hermann, saying that Liesel is welcome to come in the front door, too. The participation of Death as narrator is first seamless and then essential, as his care for the humans haunting him comes shining through.

Liesel goes to live with the mayor and his wife. After Alex and Hans leave for duty, Rudy and Liesel go to the next parade of Jews and scatter bread in the streets. They find each other and both are whipped.
